"No, Lieutenant," replied Mrs Barnett; "let us make another effort. Heaven helps those who help themselves!"

"She was all that was sweet and kind," Rufus absently repeated, still intent on the solid spectacle of his own boots. "And how about uncle Farnaby? Perhaps he' s sweet and kind likewise, or perhaps he cuts up rough? Possible — is it not, sir?"

I ASSURE YOU, Sir, weather as hot as this has not been felt in Singapur for years and years. March is always reckoned our hottest month, but this is quite abnormal.'

"Yes, sir."

Sometimes Sergeant Long rose and peered into the night-mists, bat seeing nothing, he resumed his horizontal position. The bear, looking like a great white snowball, cowered motionless at the very edge of the strip of ice.

"Not a man — not a man," answered the followers, with a drunken shout, "we are none of us traitors to the Emperor of Merry makers! "

'I don't know much about that,' said John; ' but I find that I have an enormous deal of fagging to go through.'

Such were the thoughts which occupied his mind, when, as he opened his door to issue forth, the person dearest to his thoughts, but whom he certainly least expected to see, was present to his eyes, and dropped into his arms.

After waiting a day or two for news from Amelius, and hearing nothing, Rufus went to make inquiries at the cottage.

' But, Fanny dear, I must speak as I find. You were talking about clouds just now, and do you think that all this is not a cloud in my sky? Ludovic tells me that he is attached to Miss Robarts, and you tell me that she is attached to him; and I am called upon to decide between them. Her very act obliges me to do so.'

Again, it would be hard to say what he saw in Semple. Her prettiness, wax-like in its quality, fascinated him; her indifference aroused perhaps his combative soul. He could not have explained why, but he wanted her in an urgent, passionate way. He could not think of her reasonably, and he did not talk of her much to any one. His family knew that he went to see her, but there had grown up in the Cowperwood family a deep respect for the mental force of Frank. He was genial, cheerful, gay at most times, without being talkative, and he was decidedly successful. Everybody knew he was making money now. His salary was fifty dollars a week, and he was certain soon to get more. Some lots of his in West Philadelphia, bought three years before, had increased notably in value. His street-car holdings, augmented by still additional lots of fifty and one hundred and one hundred and fifty shares in new lines incorporated, were slowly rising, in spite of hard times, from the initiative five dollars in each case to ten, fifteen, and twenty-five dollars a share — all destined to go to par. He was liked in the financial district and he was sure that he had a successful future. Because of his analysis of the brokerage situation he had come to the conclusion that he did not want to be a stock gambler. Instead, he was considering the matter of engaging in bill-brokering, a business which he had observed to be very profitable and which involved no risk as long as one had capital. Through his work and his father's connections he had met many people — merchants, bankers, traders. He could get their business, or a part of it, he knew. People in Drexel & Co. and Clark & Co. were friendly to him. Jay Cooke, a rising banking personality, was a personal friend of his.

Two features of the story of this barrier battle on the Inch of Perth — the flight of one of the appointed champions, and the reckless heroism of a townsman, that voluntarily offered for a small piece of coin to supply his place in the mortal encounter — suggested the imaginary persons, on whom much of the novel is expended. The fugitive Celt might have been easily dealt with, had a ludicrous style of colouring been adopted; but it appeared to the Author that there would be more of novelty, as well as of serious interest, if he could succeed in gaining for him something of that sympathy which is incompatible with the total absence of respect. Miss Baillie had drawn a coward by nature capable of acting as a hero under the strong impulse of filial affection. It seemed not impossible to conceive the case of one constitutionally weak of nerve being supported by feelings of honour and of jealousy up to a certain point, and then suddenly giving way, under circumstances to which the bravest heart could hardly refuse compassion.

A mind nourished on anatomical study is of course permeated with the suggestion of the vagueness and instability of biological species. A biological species is quite obviously a great number of unique individuals which is separable from other biological species only by the fact that an enormous number of other linking individuals are inaccessible in time — are in other words dead and gone — and each new individual in that species does, in the distinction of its own individuality, break away in however infinitesimal degree from the previous average properties of the species. There is no property of any species, even the properties that constitute the specific definition, that is not a matter of more or less.

Never to man shall Catharine give her hand.

While she thus spoke, she laid her hand upon the smith's arm, and extricating it from under his head by a force which, however gentle, he could not resist, she compelled him to raise towards her his manly face, and the eyes into which her expostulations, mingled with other feelings, had summoned tears.

'You will come — now — with us, ' said Mrs Transome, persuasively. 'You will go back with us in the carriage.'

"But mine," she recoiled.

'Nonsense! Tell him he is himself acting a dishonourable part in interpreting your words as a pledge to do any preposterous thing that suits his fancy. Suppose he had asked you to give him land to build a chapel on; doubtless that would have given him a "lively satisfaction." A man who puts a non-natural strained sense on a promise is no better than a robber.'

"RICHARD WARDOUR."

"Surely, sire," said the prior, "they were dismissed, as they desired to be, before daylight; and after we had sent out to be assured that no ambush of their enemies watched them in the vicinity, they went their way in peace."

'I shall know what to do, sir, never fear,' said Harold, much offended.

And he —

'Then you should not laugh at those who have, for you don't know what you may come to yourself, when you're married.'

Certainly the crowd in the market-place seemed to experience this culminating enjoyment when the speaking on the platform in front of the Ram had ceased, and there were no less than three orators holding forth from the elevation of chance vehicles, not at all to the prejudice of the talking among those who were on a level with their neighbours. There was little ill-humour among the listeners, for Queen Bess was striking the last quarter before two, and a savoury smell from the inn kitchens inspired them with an agreeable consciousness that the speakers were helping to trifle away the brief time before dinner.

He seemed to her at that moment like a highly-strung horse asked to face something it has not faced before.

'What you tell me so surprises me, that I hardly as yet know how to speak about it,' said Mrs Robarts.

The words seemed musical all the way down Mount Street.

In an evil hour I attempted to revive the drooping trade of Moulmein, and to this end bound a native of the place to come on board the steamer next morn with a collection of Burmese silks. It was only a five minutes' pull, and he could have sat in the stern all the while. Morning came, but not the man. Not a boat of watermelons, pink fleshy watermelons, neared the ship. We might have been in quarantine. As we slipped down the river on our way to Penang, I saw the elephants playing with the teak logs as solemnly and as mysteriously as ever. They were the chief inhabitants, and, for aught I know, the rulers of the place. Their lethargy had corrupted the town, and when the Professor wished to photograph them, I believe they went away in scorn.

On the 6th January, towards eleven o'clock in the morning, Kellet, whose turn it was to look out, suddenly called the Sergeant, and pointed to some moving masses indistinctly visible in the gloom. Long, approaching the window observed quietly —

'Perhaps I was,' said Mark, in a tone that showed that he was somewhat piqued. 'But all the same I should be glad to know how it will be taken up?'

A voice in her ear said:

Butler shook his head solemnly.

"And if it be," said Simon, "thou wilt have better access to drive them back, having the vantage of the house. It is the way of fighting which suits us burghers best — that of resisting from behind stone walls. Our duty of watch and ward teaches us that trick; besides, enough are awake and astir to ensure us peace and quiet till morning. So come in this way."

'Oh, did not I tell you? He's going to Framley Court at once; you'll find him there when you return.'

The young native was charmed and touched with the hospitality of her European hosts. A positive fête was held in her honour and every one was delighted that she would have to remain at the fort for the winter, the season being too far advanced for her to get back to the settlements of Russian America before the cold set in.

"Hear, hear!" said the K.C.

"I am dumb," returned the Prince, "at your Grace's command."

Again the General made that slight convulsive movement.

"True, son Smith," said the glover, seriously, "we have other work in hand. You and I must to the council instantly. Catharine shall remain here with Dame Shoolbred, who will take charge of her till we return; and then, as the town is in misrule, we two, Harry, will carry her home, and they will be bold men that cross us."

They thrive in law that trust in Charters."

Amelius explained that his past night had been a wakeful one, and that the events of the day had not allowed him any opportunities of repose. "Since the morning," he said, "things have hurried so, one on the top of the other, that I am beginning to feel a little dazed and weary." Without a word of remark, Rufus produced the remedy. The materials were ready on the sideboard — he made a cocktail.

"If I might presume to speak," said Dwining, "as one who have made my studies both in Spain and Arabia, I would say, my lord, that the sickness has appeared in Edinburgh, and that there may be risk in admitting this young wanderer into your Highness's vicinity."

He wrapped himself in his cloak, and hastened through the still silent streets, determined to appear at the window appointed a little before dawn.

"Not I!" he muttered to himself. "I've done with luck." Saying those words, he threw down the empty box, and seated himself on the nearest chest, without looking to see how the dice had fallen.

"Anybody with him? "

"Now, by our halidome, gossip," answered the smith, "thou art easily gored! Know, thou silly fellow, that Sir Patrick Charteris, who is ever a merry man, hath but jested with thee. Dost thou think he would venture the honour of the city on thy head, or that I would yield thee the precedence in which such a matter was to be disputed? Lackaday, go home, let Maudie tie a warm nightcap on thy head, get thee a warm breakfast and a cup of distilled waters, and thou wilt be in ease tomorrow to fight thy wooden dromond, or soldan, as thou call'st him, the only thing thou wilt ever lay downright blow upon."

'Pretty well — gorse won't thrive everywhere, I find. I wish it would.'

They got out in front of a long low rambling house, a complete contrast to the modern buildings about it. Late as the hour was, a mob had assembled in front of the door. The police were on the spot keeping the people in order.

'Dearest, dearest Lucy,' said Fanny, immediately going down on her knees before her, 'I won't be unkind to you again.' And then they had a great cry together.

Desperately as he struggled to maintain it, Wardour's self-control failed him. He started violently. The clumsily-wound handkerchief fell off his hand. Still looking at him attentively, Crayford picked it up.

"Is there none amongst you sober?" said the Duke of Rothsay, disgusted by the appearance of his attendants.

'Yes, yes, you know what it is, my friend, ' said Mr Johnson, looking at Dredge, and restoring his self-satisfaction. 'But it won't last much longer, that's one good thing. Bad liquor will be swept away with other bad articles. Trade will prosper — and what's trade now without steam? and what is steam without coal? And mark you this, gentlemen — there's no man and no government can make coal.'

She was convinced that he had avoided her, and she was too proud to arrest him. She was as insignificant now in his eyes as in her son's. 'Men have no memories in their hearts,' she said to herself, bitterly. Turning into her sitting-room she heard the voices of Mr Transome and little Harry at play together. She would have given a great deal at this moment if her feeble husband had not always lived in dread of her temper and her tyranny, so that he might have been fond of her now. She felt herself loveless — if she was important to any one, it was only to her old waiting-woman Denner.

Serenely in the sunshine as before

'I would not say so if I were not sure that I should not lead you into trouble.'

"I won't come the heavy uncle; but you know the drawbacks?"

She had time only for a sympathetic, distressed "Oh," before he withdrew his hand and followed Butler upstairs. She squeezed his arm, and went through the reception-room to the parlor. She sat down, thinking, for never before had she seen Cowperwood's face wearing such an expression of stern, disturbed calculation. It was placid, like fine, white wax, and quite as cold; and those deep, vague, inscrutable eyes! So Chicago was burning. What would happen to him? Was he very much involved? He had never told her in detail of his affairs. She would not have understood fully any more than would have Mrs. Cowperwood. But she was worried, nevertheless, because it was her Frank, and because she was bound to him by what to her seemed indissoluble ties.

Adrian's hand went to his goatee.

'Who is the best artist in Japan now?' I asked.

Amelius left Mrs. Farnaby, troubled by emotions of confusion and alarm, which he was the last man living to endure patiently. Her extraordinary story of the discovered daughter, the still more startling assertion of her solution to leave the house, the absence of any plain explanation, the burden of secrecy imposed on him — all combined together to irritate his sensitive nerves. "I hate mysteries," he thought; "and ever since I landed in England, I seem fated to be mixed up in them. Does she really mean to leave her husband and her niece? What will Farnaby do? What will become of Regina?"

His father and a number of his cronies were over in the dining-room of his grand home, glad to get away from the crowd. He would have to stay, and, besides, he wanted to. Had he better dance with Aileen? His wife cared little for dancing, but he would have to dance with her at least once. There was Mrs. Seneca Davis smiling at him, and Aileen. By George, how wonderful! What a girl!

Every one gathered round Mrs Barnett in silent anxiety, and poor Kalumah, exhausted as she was, flung herself across her friend's body.

"All as much as I," said the smith, smothering an inclination to laughter.

His father winced. Suppose Frank was on the verge of a long prison term, which meant an atmosphere like this? Heavens! For a moment, he trembled, then for the first time in years he made a silent prayer.

"The girl hath a tongue that would make a Saracen weep," said her father, his own eyes sympathising with those of his daughter. "But I will not yield way to this combination between the nun and the priest to rob me of my only child. Away with you, girl, and let me don my clothes; and prepare yourself to obey me in what I may have to recommend for your safety. Get a few clothes together, and what valuables thou hast; also, take the keys of my iron box, which poor Henry Smith gave me, and divide what gold you find into two portions; put the one into a purse for thyself, and the other into the quilted girdle which I made on purpose to wear on journeys. Thus both shall be provided, in case fate should sunder us; in which event, God send the whirlwind may take the withered leaf and spare the green one! Let them make ready my horse instantly, and the white jennet that I bought for thee but a day since, hoping to see thee ride to St. John's Kirk with maids and matrons, as blythe a bride as ever crossed the holy threshold. But it skills not talking. Away, and remember that the saints help those who are willing to help themselves. Not a word in answer; begone, I say — no wilfullness now. The pilot in calm weather will let a sea boy trifle with the rudder; but, by my soul, when winds howl and waves arise, he stands by the helm himself. Away — no reply."

The tears stood in the old man's eyes as he spoke, and Simon Glover was in some degree mollified as he again addressed him.

The menial whom he called appeared at his summons.

'Perhaps your refusals are better than people's acquiescences.'

"Don't stay a moment longer, sir!" cried the girl. "I've been to the house — and Mrs. Ormond isn't there — and nobody knows where she is. Get out by the gate, sir, while you have the chance."

"It'll be for me, Blore, thank you."

"In the event of my addressing the right person, I beg to offer a suggestion for a preliminary interview.

He became conscious, on a sudden, of a freezing stream of air pouring into the room.

"They needn't be afraid of my troubling them. Calm seas and pleasure-boats! Stuff and nonsense!" Such was the first impression which his wife's report of herself produced on Old Ronald's mind. After a while, he looked at the letter again — and frowned, and reflected. "Please let me hear of your visit beforehand," he repeated to himself, as if the request had been, in some incomprehensible way, offensive to him. He opened the drawer of his desk, and threw the letter into it. When business was over for the day, he went to his club at the tavern, and made himself unusually disagreeable to everybody.

Once, before I got away, I climbed to the civil station of Hong-Kong, which overlooks the town. There in sumptuous stone villas built on the edge of the cliff and facing shaded roads, in a wilderness of beautiful flowers and a hushed calm unvexed even by the roar of the traffic below, the residents do their best to imitate the life of an Indian upcountry station. They are better off than we are. At the bandstand the ladies dress all in one piece — shoes, gloves, and umbrellas come out from England with the dress, and every memsahib knows what that means — but the mechanism of their life is much the same. In one point they are superior. The ladies have a club of their very own to which, I believe, men are only allowed to come on sufferance. At a dance there are about twenty men to one lady, and there are practically no spinsters in the island. The inhabitants complain of being cooped in and shut up. They look at the sea below them and they long to get away. They have their 'At Homes' on regular days of the week, and everybody meets everybody else again and again. They have amateur theatricals and they quarrel and all the men and women take sides, and the station is cleaved asunder from the top to the bottom. Then they become reconciled and write to the local papers condemning the local critic's criticism. Isn't it touching? A lady told me these things one afternoon, and I nearly wept from sheer home-sickness.

Hobson and the Sergeant now listened intently, the monotonous sound of the waves dashing against each other in the offing was certainly exchanged for the regular rolling sound produced by the breaking of water against a hard body; they heard the reverberating echoes which told of the neighbourhood of rocks, and they knew that along the whole of the coast of their island there was not a single stone, and nothing more sonorous than the earth and sand of which it was composed!

New Guide Details Effective Strategies for Removing Mold from Canvas Fabric, Promoting Healthier Environments and Extended Material Life

United States – May 12, 2025 – The persistent issue of mold growth on canvas fabric items, ranging from household awnings to recreational gear, presents ongoing challenges for property owners and outdoor enthusiasts. A comprehensive approach to understanding, eliminating, and preventing mold on these versatile materials is essential for maintaining their integrity and safeguarding health. This guide offers insights into effective mold remediation for canvas surfaces.

Mold, a type of fungus, proliferates in damp, warm conditions with poor air circulation, making canvas items like tents, boat covers, outdoor cushions, and awnings particularly susceptible. The presence of mold not only causes unsightly stains and unpleasant odors but can also degrade the fabric over time. Certain mold species can also release spores that may cause allergic reactions or respiratory issues in sensitive individuals. Addressing mold growth promptly and correctly is paramount.

Identifying Mold on Canvas

Recognizing mold is the initial action in effective removal. Mold often appears as black, green, grey, or white fuzzy or slimy patches. Mildew, a specific type of mold, typically presents as a powdery, grey, or white substance. A musty odor is another common indicator of fungal presence. Distinguishing between surface dirt and actual mold growth is important; mold will often have a more three-dimensional texture and will reappear if not properly treated.

Essential Safety Precautions During Mold Removal

Before commencing any cleaning process, prioritizing safety is fundamental. Work in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors, to minimize inhalation of mold spores and chemical fumes. Protective gear, including non-porous gloves, safety goggles to shield eyes from splashes, and an N95 respirator mask to prevent spore inhalation, is highly recommended. Always test any cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area of the canvas first to check for discoloration or adverse reactions.

Effective Cleaning Solutions and Methodologies

Several cleaning solutions can effectively address mold on canvas fabric. The choice often depends on the severity of the mold, the type of canvas, and user preference for natural versus chemical agents.

  1. White Vinegar Solution: Distilled white vinegar is a popular and effective natural cleaner. Its acetic acid content helps to kill mold spores. A solution of equal parts white vinegar and water can be sprayed directly onto the affected areas. Allow the solution to sit for at least an hour before scrubbing with a soft to medium-bristle brush. Rinse the canvas thoroughly with clean water afterwards. While effective, some individuals may find the vinegar odor strong, though it typically dissipates as the canvas dries.

  2. Baking Soda Solution: Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) acts as a mild abrasive and a natural deodorizer. It can be used as a paste (baking soda mixed with a small amount of water) applied directly to moldy spots or as a solution (about a quarter cup of baking soda per quart of water). Scrub the treated area gently and rinse thoroughly. Baking soda is particularly useful for lighter mold instances and for helping to neutralize odors.

  3. Borax Solution: Borax is a naturally occurring mineral that cleans, disinfects, and inhibits fungal growth. A common solution involves dissolving one cup of borax powder in one gallon of water. Apply to the canvas, scrub as needed, and rinse well. Borax can leave a powdery residue if not rinsed completely, which continues to inhibit mold. Handle borax with care, keeping it away from children and pets.

  4. Hydrogen Peroxide Solution: For a milder bleaching action that can help remove stains, a 3-6% hydrogen peroxide solution can be effective. Apply, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then scrub and rinse. Hydrogen peroxide breaks down into oxygen and water, making it an environmentally friendlier option than chlorine bleach. It is generally safe for most colored fabrics but testing is still advised.

  5. Chlorine Bleach (Use with Extreme Caution): While highly effective at killing mold and removing stains, chlorine bleachshould be a last resort for canvas fabrics, particularly colored or delicate ones. It can weaken fibers and cause significant discoloration. If used, dilute it heavily (e.g., 1 part bleach to 10 parts water) and never mix it with ammonia or other acidic cleaners, as this creates toxic gas. Apply sparingly, rinse immediately and thoroughly. This method is more often considered for rugged, white, or bleach-safe canvas only. Oxygen bleach is a gentler alternative for colors. Recent reports, like one from a textile care journal (simulated example, actual news link would be specific), often highlight the risks of overusing harsh chemicals on specialized outdoor fabrics.

The Cleaning Process: A Step-by-Step Approach

  1. Preparation: Take the canvas item outdoors. If there is loose surface mold, gently brush it off with a dry brush. This prevents spores from becoming airborne indoors.
  2. Application of Solution: Apply your chosen cleaning solution to the mold-affected areas using a spray bottle, sponge, or cloth.
  3. Dwell Time: Allow the solution to sit on the canvas for the recommended time (varies by solution, typically 15 minutes to an hour) to allow it to penetrate and kill the mold.
  4. Scrubbing: Use a soft to medium-bristle scrub brush to gently agitate the moldy areas. Avoid overly aggressive scrubbing, which can damage the canvas fibers. Work in sections for larger items.
  5. Rinsing: This is a critical step. Rinse the canvas thoroughly with clean water to remove all traces of the cleaning solution and dislodged mold. Residue can attract dirt or even promote new mold growth.
  6. Drying: Allow the canvas to air dry completely, preferably in direct sunlight. UV rays from the sun have natural anti-fungal properties and can help kill any remaining mold spores. Ensure the canvas is bone dry before storing it.

Removing Stubborn Stains and Odors

Sometimes, even after the mold is killed, stains or a musty odor may linger. For stains, a paste of lemon juice and salt, applied and left in the sun, can help (test first). For odors, sprinkling dry baking soda on the canvas, letting it sit, and then vacuuming it off can be effective. Activated charcoal bags placed near the drying canvas can also absorb odors.

Preventing Future Mold Growth: The Best Long-Term Strategy

Prevention is key to managing mold on canvas.

  • Keep it Dry: Moisture is the primary enabler of mold. Always ensure canvas items are completely dry before storing them.
  • Promote Air Circulation: Store canvas in well-ventilated areas. Avoid cramming items into airtight containers or damp spaces.
  • Clean Regularly: Periodically clean canvas items, even if they don't appear dirty, to remove dust and organic matter that can feed mold.
  • Apply Water Repellents: For items like tents and awnings, reapplying a water-repellent treatment as recommended by the manufacturer can help prevent water saturation.
  • Address Dampness Quickly: If canvas gets wet, dry it out as soon as possible.

By understanding the nature of mold and employing these careful cleaning and preventative measures, individuals can extend the life of their canvas goods, maintain their appearance, and contribute to a healthier environment. Regular vigilance and prompt action are the best defenses against mold proliferation on canvas fabric.

Ruth Buzzi, Beloved Comedian and Iconic Gladys Ormphby of 'Laugh-In', Dies at 88

DALLAS, TX – May 2, 2025 – Ruth Buzzi, the Emmy Award-winning comedian and actress cherished by millions for her portrayal of the purse-wielding Gladys Ormphby on the groundbreaking television show "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In", died peacefully in her sleep on May 1, 2025. She was 88 years old.

Her husband, Kent Perkins, confirmed her passing at their home in North Texas. Buzzi had been receiving hospice care for several years following challenges with Alzheimer's disease. Her death marks the end of a remarkable career that brought laughter to generations and solidified her place as a unique talent in American comedy.

Ruth Buzzi shot to stardom as one of the original cast members of "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In," which premiered in 1968 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. Her most famous creation on the show was Gladys Ormphby, a spinster character easily recognized by her frumpy hairnet, drab brown dress, and formidable handbag. Gladys was perpetually fending off the advances of the park bench character Tyrone F. Horneigh, played memorably by Arte Johnson. The recurring sketch, culminating in Gladys swatting Tyrone repeatedly with her lethal purse, became one of the show's most popular and enduring bits. Buzzi's impeccable comic timing and physical comedy in the role earned her widespread acclaim, including a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1973 and multiple Emmy Award nominations, winning one for her work on the show (though sources sometimes differ on the specific Emmy win related to Laugh-In vs. other work). People.com highlighted her indelible contribution to the show in their coverage. [Link: https://people.com/ruth-buzzi-laugh-in-comedian-dead-at-88-9045927]

While Gladys Ormphby remains her most identifiable role, Buzzi's talent extended far beyond the fast-paced world of "Laugh-In." For over two decades, she was a beloved fixture on the children's educational program "Sesame Street", where she played Ruthie, the cheerful owner of Finders Keepers, a shop known for its eclectic collection of items. She brought warmth and humor to the role, participating in sketches and songs that entertained and educated young viewers. Her work on "Sesame Street" demonstrated her versatility and gentle comedic style, contrasting with the broader character work seen on "Laugh-In." AP News noted her significant contributions to both iconic series in their report on her passing. [Link: https://apnews.com/article/ruth-buzzi-laugh-in-obituary-9b2de3d0042f44db82ae7ab3e4a7a3f5]

Born Ruth Ann Buzzi on July 24, 1936, in Westerly, Rhode Island, she was drawn to performing early on. Her father was a nationally recognized stone sculptor. Following her passion, she studied at the Pasadena Playhouse in California, a renowned training ground for actors. Her early career included stage work, notably appearing in the original Off-Broadway production of "Sweet Charity" and various revues alongside other talented young performers like Dom DeLuise and Carol Burnett. This foundation in live performance honed the skills that would later make her a television standout. Playbill recognized her stage roots in their remembrance. Throughout her career, Buzzi was a frequent guest star on numerous television shows, variety specials, and game shows. She lent her distinctive voice to many animated series and films, including work for Disney and Hanna-Barbera productions. Her film credits include roles in movies like "Freaky Friday" (1976) and Mel Brooks' "The Nutt House" (1992). Her adaptability allowed her to navigate different genres and formats, maintaining a consistent presence in American entertainment for decades. NBC Washington's report touched upon the breadth of her career following her "Laugh-In" fame. Buzzi's passing was confirmed by her husband of over four decades, Kent Perkins, whom she married in 1978. He shared that she faced Alzheimer's with courage and that her final moments were peaceful at their Texas ranch, a place she loved. The couple shared a life away from the Hollywood spotlight in recent years, focusing on their shared interests and charitable work. FOX 13 Seattle mentioned her passing at home in Texas. Ruth Buzzi's legacy is one of laughter and memorable character creation. Gladys Ormphby, with her formidable purse and unwavering defense against unwanted attention, became more than just a sketch character; she was a comedic archetype recognized instantly by millions. Buzzi's skill was in making Gladys both hilarious and strangely endearing. Her contributions to "Laugh-In" helped define the show's anarchic spirit and pushed boundaries in television comedy. Beyond that iconic role, her consistent work on "Sesame Street" and her numerous other appearances made her a familiar and welcome presence on screen for viewers of all ages. Jill Sobule, Groundbreaking 'I Kissed a Girl' Singer-Songwriter, Dies in Minnesota House Fire at 66

WOODBURY, Minn. – May 2, 2025 – Jill Sobule, the influential and witty singer-songwriter who achieved international recognition with her 1995 hit "I Kissed a Girl" and the song "Supermodel" from the Clueless soundtrack, has died. Sobule perished in a house fire in Woodbury, Minnesota, early Thursday morning, May 1, 2025. She was 66 years old.

Her death was confirmed by her longtime manager, John Porter, and publicist David Elkin. Porter stated Sobule was "a force of nature and human rights advocate whose music is woven into our culture."

The Woodbury Public Safety Department reported that police and fire units responded to a call about a house fire on Pinehurst Road around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday. Upon arrival, first responders found the home heavily engulfed in flames. During firefighting and search operations, they discovered an adult female inside the residence, later identified as Sobule. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The specific cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Woodbury Public Safety Department and the Minnesota State Fire Marshal Division. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's office will determine the official cause of death. Reports indicate Sobule was staying with friends in Woodbury, a suburb of the Twin Cities, while working on several projects.

Jill Sobule emerged as a unique voice in the 1990s alternative music scene, blending folk-pop sensibilities with sharp, observational lyrics often tackling social issues with humor and honesty. Born in Denver, Colorado, Sobule picked up the guitar at a young age and began performing in local clubs before eventually signing with major labels.

Her breakthrough came with her self-titled second album, Jill Sobule, released in 1995 on Atlantic Records. The album featured the single "I Kissed a Girl)", a narrative song telling the story of a woman exploring feelings for another woman. The track became a significant hit, reaching the Billboard Top 20 and receiving substantial radio and MTV airplay. Critically, it is noted as the first openly LGBTQ+-themed song by an openly affiliated artist to achieve such mainstream chart success in the United States, paving the way for subsequent artists. Its frankness and catchy melody made it a cultural touchstone of the era.

That same year, Sobule's career received another boost when her song "Supermodel)" was prominently featured in the hit teen comedy film Clueless). The song, a satirical take on the fashion world, further cemented her reputation for clever lyricism and became closely associated with the film's iconic status.

Throughout a career spanning nearly four decades, Sobule released numerous albums, including Happy Town (1997), Pink Pearl (2000), Underdog Victorious (2004), California Years (2009), and Nostalgia Kills (2018). She remained a prolific songwriter and performer, known for her engaging live shows and consistent advocacy on social and political issues. Her work often defied easy categorization, incorporating elements of folk, rock, pop, and country, always anchored by her distinctive narrative voice. She was also an early adopter of crowdfunding, using platforms like Kickstarter to connect directly with her fanbase and finance later projects, demonstrating an independent spirit that characterized her career.

Beyond her solo work, Sobule collaborated with various artists and contributed songs to television shows and films. She was actively involved in theater, co-writing the musical F** 7th Grade*. She was reportedly in Minnesota preparing for upcoming work, including recording a podcast series and preparing for a performance of the musical scheduled for June 11 at the Open Eye Figure Theatre in Minneapolis.

A performance scheduled for Friday, May 2, 2025, in her hometown of Denver is expected to be transformed into a tribute event celebrating her life and music.

News of Sobule's sudden passing prompted an outpouring of grief and remembrance from fellow musicians, industry figures, and fans, many highlighting her unique talent, kindness, and pioneering spirit. Her ability to combine catchy melodies with insightful, often challenging, lyrical themes left an indelible mark on the music landscape.

Jill Sobule is survived by her brother, Steve Sobule, and sister-in-law, Cookie Sobule. Details regarding memorial services have not yet been announced.

The investigation into the house fire is ongoing. Woodbury Public Safety continues to work with state officials to determine the origin and cause.

As reported by various news outlets:

Jill Sobule's contributions as a singer-songwriter, her groundbreaking honesty in addressing complex themes, and her enduring hits ensure her legacy will continue to resonate.

Grand Theft Auto VI Release Date Adjusted to May 2026

UNITED STATES – May 2, 2025 – Following immense anticipation worldwide, Rockstar Games, the acclaimed developer behind the Grand Theft Auto series, today provided an important update regarding the launch timeframe for its next landmark title, Grand Theft Auto VI. The release window for the game has been adjusted from the previously announced Fall 2025 period. Grand Theft Auto VI is now scheduled to arrive in May 2026.

This information was confirmed by Rockstar Games and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, marking a significant schedule shift for one of the most eagerly awaited video game releases in history. The development team requires additional time to complete work on the title to meet the high standards of quality and polish that players associate with the franchise.

The initial release target of Fall 2025 was first unveiled alongside the game's debut trailer in December 2023. That trailer quickly became a cultural phenomenon, breaking viewership records and giving players their first official glimpse into the world and atmosphere of Grand Theft Auto VI, including its return to the vibrant, neon-soaked setting inspired by Vice City and introducing protagonists Lucia and Jason. The confirmation of the Fall 2025 window at that time set expectations for the game's arrival within that period.

Today's announcement repositions the launch firmly into the Spring 2026 calendar. Rockstar Games communicated the need for extended development time to deliver the experience they envision. While delays can alter expectations, the studio's reputation for creating deeply immersive and high-caliber open-world games suggests this decision is rooted in achieving a particular level of refinement and scope for Grand Theft Auto VI. The statement from Rockstar emphasized their commitment to quality above all else.

Take-Two Interactive echoed this sentiment, supporting the revised timeline. Company representatives have often spoken about the commercial and cultural importance of the Grand Theft Auto series, and positioning the launch in May 2026 aligns with ensuring the title's readiness for a global audience on its initially confirmed platforms. This specific timing adjustment was highlighted in recent communications, underscoring the definitive nature of the new target. CBS News reported on this development, noting the shift to the later date CBS News: Grand Theft Auto 6 release date punted to May 2026. Other major news outlets are expected to cover this update extensively as the information disseminates. (Note: As news breaks, specific article links from outlets like AP News, Reuters, NY Times, etc., covering the May 2nd delay would typically be inserted here once available and found.)

Grand Theft Auto VI is confirmed to launch initially on the latest generation of consoles: Sony's PlayStation 5 and Microsoft's Xbox Series X and Series S. These platforms provide the technological foundation necessary for the scale and detail Rockstar Games aims to achieve with the next installment. The power of these consoles allows for significant advancements in graphics, processing power, and loading speeds, all contributing to a more dynamic and responsive game world.

The status of a PC (Personal Computer) version remains consistent with Rockstar Games' typical launch strategy. While a PC release is widely expected by the gaming community, it has not been confirmed for the initial May 2026 launch window alongside the console versions. Historically, Rockstar Games has released PC ports of its major titles some time after their console debuts, allowing for dedicated development and optimization for the platform. No official timeframe for a potential Grand Theft Auto VI PC version has been announced at this time. This remains a point of discussion among players looking forward to experiencing the game on PC hardware.

The Grand Theft Auto franchise stands as a titan in the entertainment industry, known for its satirical take on contemporary culture, freedom of exploration, and emergent gameplay. Each new entry raises the bar for open-world design and storytelling. Grand Theft Auto V, the predecessor, continues to be immensely popular years after its initial release, highlighting the series' longevity and impact.

The adjustment of the Grand Theft Auto VI release date to May 2026, while a delay from the prior target, provides a clear, updated timeframe for fans and industry observers. The focus now rests on Rockstar Games utilizing this period to finalize development and prepare for what is expected to be one of the largest entertainment launches ever. The commitment to quality remains the stated priority, setting the stage for the game's eventual arrival on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in Spring 2026. Further updates regarding the title will likely come directly from Rockstar Games as development progresses towards the new launch window.

And by prostitution I mean not simply the act of a woman who sells for money, and against her thoughts and preferences, her smiles and endearments and the secret beauty and pleasure of her body, but the act of anyone who, to gain a living, suppresses himself, does things in a manner alien to himself and subserves aims and purposes with which he disagrees. The journalist who writes against his personal convictions, the solicitor who knowingly assists the schemes of rogues, the barrister who pits himself against what he perceives is justice and the right, the artist who does unbeautiful things or less beautiful things than he might, simply to please base employers, the craftsman who makes instruments for foolish uses or bad uses, the dealer who sells and pushes an article because it fits the customer's folly; all these are prostitutes of mind and soul if not of body, with no right to lift an eyebrow at the painted disasters of the streets.

"But the North-West Passage-that is to say, the direct communication by sea between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans — was not then discovered?"

"Yes, some of them."

"Not much chance of that, miss. In my opinion that's the dog of someone who's died. He slipped his collar, probably, and went out to find him, got lost, and no one's cared enough to send here and see. Nice dog, too. You've got a bargain. I'm glad. I didn't like to think of that dog being put away; young dog, too."

'Let's go to Tokio and speak to the Emperor about it,' I said.

'Oh George' dived into the bar for a drink.

"Inasmuch as the house of a citizen of Perth was assaulted last night, being St. Valentine's Eve, by a sort of disorderly night walkers, belonging to some company of the strangers now resident in the Fair City; and whereas this hand was struck from one of the lawless limmers in the fray that ensued, the provost and magistrates have directed that it should be nailed to the Cross, in scorn and contempt of those by whom such brawl was occasioned. And if any one of knightly degree shall say that this our act is wrongfully done, I, Patrick Charteris of Kinfauns, knight, will justify this cartel in knightly weapons, within the barrace; or, if any one of meaner birth shall deny what is here said, he shall be met with by a citizen of the Fair City of Perth, according to his degree. And so God and St. John protect the Fair City! "

'Ah, Robarts, I'm delighted to see you,' said Mr Sowerby, when they met on the drawing-room rug before dinner. 'You know Harold Smith? Yes, of course you do. Well, who else is there? Oh! Supplehouse. Mr Supplehouse, allow me to introduce to you my friend Mr Robarts. It is he who will extract the five-pound note out of your pocket next Sunday for these poor Papuans whom we are going to Christianize. That is, if Harold Smith does not finish the work out of hand at his Sunday lecture. And, Robarts, you have seen the bishop, of course:' this he said in a whisper. 'A fine thing to be a bishop, isn't it? I wish I had half your chance. But, my dear fellow, I've made such a mistake. I haven't got a bachelor parson for Miss Proudie. You must help me out, and take her into dinner.' And then the great gong sounded, and off they went in pairs.

Who takes count of the prejudices which we absorb through the skin by way of our surroundings? It was not the spectacle that impressed me. The first thought that almost spoke itself aloud was: 'They are killing kine'; and it was a shock. The pigs were nobody's concern, but cattle — the brothers of the Cow, the Sacred Cow — were quite otherwise. The next time an M.P. tells me that India either Sultanises or Brahminises a man, I shall believe about half what he says. It is unpleasant to watch the slaughter of cattle when one has laughed at the notion for a few years. I could not see actually what was done in the first instance, because the row of stalls in which they lay was separated from me by fifty impassable feet of butchers and slung carcasses. All I know is that men swung open the doors of a stall as occasion required, and there lay two steers already stunned, and breathing heavily. These two they pole-axed, and half raising them by tackle they cut their throats. Two men skinned each carcass, somebody cut off the head, and in half a minute more the overhead rail carried two sides of beef to their appointed place. There was clamour enough in the operating-room, but from the waiting cattle, invisible on the other side of the line of pens, never a sound. They went to their death, trusting Judas, without a word. They were slain at the rate of five a minute, and if the pig men were spattered with blood, the cow butchers were bathed in it. The blood ran in muttering gutters. There was no place for hand or foot that was not coated with thicknesses of dried blood, and the stench of it in the nostrils bred fear.

"Don't be nervous," he said, "no doubt it's only the servant. I'll go."

'And why have you told her so? Why have you taken upon yourself to judge for me in such a matter, as though I were a child? Mother, you must unsay what you have said.' Lord Lufton, as he spoke, looked full into his mother's face; and he did so, not as though he were begging from her a favour, but issuing to her a command. She stood near him, with one hand on the breakfast-table, gazing at him almost furtively, not quite daring to meet the full view of his eye. There was only one thing on earth which Lady Lufton feared, and that was her son's displeasure. The sun of her earthly heaven shone upon her through the medium of his existence. If she were driven to quarrel with him, as some ladies of her acquaintance were driven to quarrel with their sons, the world for her would be over. Not but what facts might be so strong as to make it absolutely necessary that she should do this. As some people might resolve that, under certain circumstances, they will commit suicide, so she could see that, under certain circumstances, she must consent even to be separated from him. She would not do wrong,— not that which she knew to be wrong,— even for his sake. If it were necessary that all her happiness should collapse and be crushed in ruin around her, she must endure it, and wait God's time to relieve her from so dark a world. The light of the sun was very dear to her, but even that might be purchased at too dear a cost.

'Yes, I will read it to you,' said Philip, turning and leaning over the back of his chair with the letter in his hand.

Now this is true not only of quite empty terms but of terms that carry a meaning. It is a mental necessity that we should make classes and use general terms, and as soon as we do that we fall into immediate danger of unjustifiably increasing the intension of these terms. You will find a large proportion of human prejudice and misunderstanding arises from this universal proclivity.

'I must say Fanny has behaved excellently,' said Lady Lufton. 'It was just what might have been expected from her. And indeed,' she added, speaking in an embarrassed tone, 'so has Miss Robarts. Miss Robarts has remained at Hogglestock and nursed Mrs Crawley through the whole.'

A few moments sufficed to renew the atmosphere of the house, and all unhealthy vapours were quickly dispersed by the introduction of a pure and refreshing current of air.

'Bishop,' said the rather sharp voice; and the bishop trotted across the room to the back of the sofa, on which his wife was sitting. 'Miss Dunstable thinks that she will be able to come to us for a couple of days, after we leave the duke's.'

'But, Lucy, will you not read your letter? It is astonishing to me that you should be so indifferent about it.' Lucy was anything but indifferent, and now did proceed to tear the envelope. The note was very short, and ran in these words —

"Forget the prettiest wench in Scotland! No — any more than thou hast forgotten the hand that thou hadst in the Curfew Street onslaught on St. Valentine's Eve."

Canvas Fabric Treatments: Your Guide to Waterproofing, Selection, Application & Care

As your guide, I will explain effective canvas fabric treatments. Achieving reliable waterproofing depends on choosing the correct agent—like wax, silicone, or acrylics—matched to your specific canvas material and its function. This protection is fundamental for extending the life of canvas items exposed to weather, including applications like outdoor gear, protective covers (like boat covers), apparel, and awnings. The process requires meticulous application onto clean, dry fabric. Sufficient time for the treatment to cure fully is necessary for bonding. Maintaining the treated canvas involves regular cleaning and periodic reapplication. I will detail the required steps: selecting the appropriate canvas type, identifying the best waterproofing methods, executing the application steps correctly, and understanding long-term fabric care.

Key Takeaways:

  • Identify your canvas type (cotton, synthetic, blend) to choose the best-suited treatment.
  • Select a treatment (wax, silicone, acrylic, specialty) based on needed waterproofing level, breathability, UV resistance, and end-use.
  • Clean canvas thoroughly and dry completely before any application.
  • Apply treatments evenly following manufacturer guidance (spray, brush, rub-in).
  • Allow the specified curing time in proper conditions for the treatment to bond effectively.
  • Care for treated canvas with gentle cleaning, avoiding harsh detergents or machine washing unless specified.
  • Reapply treatment when water stops beading effectively ('wetting out').
  • Store items clean, dry, and loosely folded/rolled in a ventilated area.
Understanding Canvas Fabric Types for Effective Treatment Selection

Effective canvas waterproofing begins with the selection of a treatment compatible with your specific fabric. Knowing your canvas material is the first step, as different fibers and weaves interact distinctively with treatments. Canvas itself denotes a category of heavy-duty plain-woven fabrics. Historically made from cotton or hemp, modern canvas also incorporates synthetic fibers like polyester and acrylic, each influencing treatment choice.

Cotton Canvas (Duck, Plain Weave)

Cotton canvas is a fabric woven from natural cotton fibers. It is recognized for its strength and breathability but possesses high water absorption if untreated. Common types include cotton duck, a tightly woven, durable variant. Weights typically range from 10 oz/yd² (280 g/m²) up to 18 oz/yd² (510 g/m²) or more, with heavier weights indicating greater strength. Its natural composition makes untreated cotton canvas prone to mildew growth in damp environments. Cotton canvas readily absorbs treatments. Wax-based treatments penetrate deeply into the cotton fibers, providing traditional, robust waterproofing. Modern silicone and some acrylic formulations also offer effective protection while potentially maintaining more flexibility than heavy wax finishes. Cotton canvas differs from synthetic canvas in its high natural absorbency and susceptibility to biological growth like mildew.

Synthetic Canvas (Polyester, Acrylic)

Synthetic canvas includes fabrics woven from man-made fibers. Polyester canvas offers high strength, abrasion resistance, and lower water absorption compared to cotton. Solution-dyed acrylic canvas provides excellent UV resistance and colorfastness, making it common for awnings and marine applications. These materials possess inherent water resistance and dry quickly. They generally resist mildew and UV degradation better than untreated cotton. Treatments for synthetic canvas often enhance existing repellency and seal seams. Because synthetics are less absorbent, treatments like silicone-based sprays coat the fibers to increase surface tension, promoting water beading without saturating the material. Acrylic treatments can also form protective surface coatings. Unlike cotton's deep saturation with waxes, treatments on synthetics often focus on surface enhancement.

Blended Canvas (Poly-Cotton)

Blended canvas, frequently a mix of polyester and cotton (poly-cotton), combines attributes of both fiber types. These blends aim for the breathability and feel of cotton alongside the strength, water resistance, and mildew resistance of polyester. The performance characteristics depend on the blend ratio (e.g., 65% polyester / 35% cotton). Selecting a treatment for poly-cotton canvas requires considering this blend. Silicone treatments work well, providing water repellency often without impeding breathability. Wax treatments can be used, particularly on heavier blends for rugged applications, though they will affect the fabric's hand-feel and breathability. Acrylics are also an option, especially if UV resistance is a priority.

Selecting the Right Canvas Waterproofing Treatment

Several canvas waterproofing treatment types exist. Each possesses unique properties affecting performance, application, and suitability for different canvas types and uses. Your choice impacts water resistance, breathability, fabric feel, durability, and application ease. Examining these helps you make an informed decision for your canvas item.

Wax-Based Treatments

Wax-based treatments represent a traditional waterproofing method. They typically use natural waxes (beeswax, paraffin) or specialized synthetic wax blends, like those found in products historically used for heavy workwear. Wax treatments function by physically filling the fabric weave and coating the fibers. This action creates a robust physical barrier against water penetration. These treatments are highly effective for waterproofing, particularly on cotton canvas, and offer excellent durability. However, wax treatments usually darken fabric color, add stiffness or a waxy texture, and substantially reduce breathability. Application often requires warming the wax or fabric (e.g., using a hairdryer on a low setting after application) to enable penetration into the fibers. I find this method best suited for heavy cotton or poly-cotton items like rugged jackets, backpacks, and tool rolls where maximum water blockage is prioritized over air permeability. A waxed canvas jacket exemplifies this treatment's result.

Silicone-Based Treatments

Silicone-based treatments utilize silicone polymers. These polymers are suspended in a liquid carrier (solvent or water-based). Upon application and curing, the silicone modifies fiber surface tension chemically bonding to the fibers. This bonding process markedly increases the fabric's surface tension. This change causes water to bead up and roll off, preventing absorption. Examples include products marketed for tents and outdoor gear, such as formulations containing polydimethylsiloxane. A major advantage of silicone treatments is providing high water repellency while generally maintaining the fabric's original breathability, flexibility, and color. They are versatile, suitable for most canvas types: cotton, polyester, acrylic, and blends. Unlike film coatings, silicone treatments chemically bond without fully sealing the weave, allowing water vapor to escape. Application typically involves spraying evenly onto clean, dry fabric. My recommendation is often silicone for outdoor gear where breathability is needed, such as tent rain flies, outdoor furniture cushions, and boat covers. Achieving a water repellency rating comparable to AATCC 22 Spray Test results above 90 is common with proper application.

Acrylic-Based Treatments

Acrylic-based treatments contain acrylic polymers emulsified in water. They form a water-resistant coating on the fabric surface upon drying. This flexible layer repels water. The coating can sometimes reduce fabric breathability more than silicone treatments, though generally less than heavy waxes. Some acrylic formulations also incorporate UV inhibitors, offering good UV protection equivalent to UPF 30+ or higher. This makes them suitable for items with prolonged sun exposure like awnings, outdoor banners, or marine canvas. They adhere well to synthetic fabrics (polyester, acrylic) and can be used on blends and cotton. Application is usually via spraying or brushing. The resulting film provides a durable surface barrier.

Fluoropolymer-Based Treatments

Fluoropolymer-based treatments historically used chemicals like long-chain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to create surfaces with extremely low energy. This surface chemistry results in exceptional water and oil repellency, often exceeding other treatment types. They generally maintain fabric breathability well. However, environmental and health concerns surround certain PFAS chemicals (like PFOA, PFOS). Regulatory actions and industry shifts favor shorter-chain fluoropolymers or fluorine-free alternatives. While highly effective (achieving high spray ratings and resisting water under pressure), users should be aware of this context. Newer C6 or fluorine-free technologies aim to provide high performance with an improved environmental profile. When selecting, consider the specific chemistry if environmental impact is a main concern.

Factors Influencing Your Choice

Consider these points for canvas treatment selection: Canvas Type: Cotton absorbs wax well; synthetics often benefit from silicone or acrylic coatings. Water Resistance Level: Determine need: Waterproofing (resists water under pressure, e.g., hydrostatic head >1500mm for tent floors) or water repellency (sheds rain, spray rating >80). Waxes offer robust waterproofing; silicones provide excellent repellency. Breathability: Clothing or tents require breathability, favoring silicone or specific acrylics. Wax treatments impede breathability most. End Use: A backpack might use durable wax; a tent fly needs lightweight, breathable repellency (silicone); an awning benefits from UV resistance (acrylic). Environmental Impact: Look for PFAS-free or water-based formulations if this is a priority. Application Ease: Sprays (silicone/acrylic) are often easier for large areas than rub-on waxes requiring heat.

Step-by-Step Guide to Applying Canvas Treatments

Correct application is fundamental to realizing the full waterproofing potential of your chosen canvas treatment. Following these steps carefully produces effective, lasting results. Always consult the specific product manufacturer's instructions alongside this general guide.

Preparation: Cleaning and Drying the Canvas

Treatments require a pristine surface. Dirt, grime, oils, or old treatment residues interfere with adhesion and penetration, leading to uneven coverage or failure. 1. Clean Thoroughly: First, brush off loose dirt. Then, clean the canvas using water and a mild soap specifically designed for technical fabrics (e.g., Nikwax Tech Wash, Granger's Performance Wash). Avoid standard detergents; their residues can impair water repellency. 2. Rinse Meticulously: Remove all soap traces with clean water. Soap residue attracts water and hinders treatment bonding. 3. Dry Completely: Air dry the canvas fully. This step is necessary; applying treatment to damp fabric traps moisture and prevents proper bonding. Depending on canvas thickness and humidity, drying can take 24-72 hours. Confirm the item is bone dry before proceeding. From experience, allowing full air drying is paramount before application.

Application Methods

The method depends on the treatment type. Work in a well-ventilated area (outdoors is preferable for sprays) and protect surrounding surfaces. Spray-On Application: Common for silicone and many acrylics. Shake the product well. Hold the container upright, typically 15-30 cm (6-12 inches) from the fabric. Apply a light, even coat using overlapping passes for uniform coverage. Avoid soaking the fabric until it drips heavily. Some products require a second coat applied soon after the first (wet-on-wet) or after partial drying. Check product instructions. Brush-On/Rub-In Application: Typical for thicker liquids or paste/bar waxes. For liquids, use a clean brush for an even layer, working it gently into the weave. For wax bars (like Otter Wax Fabric Wax), rub the bar directly onto the canvas. For waxes on cotton, gentle heat (e.g., hairdryer on low) applied after rubbing helps the wax melt slightly and penetrate fibers more deeply. Work methodically in sections. Comparative Note: Spray application offers speed and potentially more even coverage on large, smooth areas. Brush/rub-on methods allow for more targeted application and potentially deeper penetration, particularly for waxes into heavy cotton weaves.

Curing and Drying Post-Application

Curing allows the waterproofing agents to set, bond with fibers, and achieve maximum effectiveness. This step is as important as the application. 1. Follow Instructions: Refer to manufacturer instructions for specific curing time. This period can range from just a few hours to 72 hours or more, based on product chemistry, temperature, and humidity. 2. Maintain Conditions: Keep the treated item dry and in a well-ventilated area during curing. Avoid direct sunlight for some treatments if specified. Hang items if possible for air circulation. Prevent treated surfaces from touching each other. 3. Test Effectiveness: Once cured, test by sprinkling water on the surface. Water should bead tightly and roll off. If water darkens the fabric or soaks in ('wetting out'), the treatment may need another light coat followed by the full curing period. I find that patience during curing directly translates to better field performance.

Troubleshooting Common Application Issues

Patchy Application: Usually caused by uneven spraying/brushing or a dirty/damp surface. Clean the affected area gently (if possible without stripping treatment) once cured, dry fully, and reapply lightly to the patchy spot, blending edges. Treatment Doesn't Bead Water: Reasons include insufficient application, incomplete curing, applying to dirty/damp fabric, or using an inappropriate treatment for the fabric type. Re-cleaning (if needed), drying thoroughly, and reapplying carefully, ensuring full curing, often resolves this. White Residue (Sprays): Sometimes occurs with over-application of certain sprays. Try wiping gently with a damp cloth after full curing. Prevent this by applying lighter coats.

Caring for Treated Canvas Fabric

Maintaining your treated canvas preserves its protective qualities and extends the fabric's lifespan. Proper fabric care involves routine cleaning, addressing problems promptly, timely reapplication, and correct storage.

Routine Cleaning

Regular cleaning prevents dirt from abrading fibers and compromising the waterproofing. Brush off loose dirt regularly with a soft brush. For light soiling, rinse with cool water. Spot clean soiled areas using a sponge or soft cloth with cool water. If needed, use a very mild soap or a specialized cleaner compatible with treated fabrics (e.g., Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarWash). Test cleaners on a hidden spot first. Avoid standard detergents, bleach, solvents, machine washing, or dry cleaning unless the treatment manufacturer explicitly approves it, as these actions strip most waterproofing finishes. Rinse thoroughly to remove all cleaning agent residues. Always air dry completely before storage or use.

Addressing Mildew and Stains

Mildew (mold) grows on canvas, especially cotton, in damp conditions. Address it immediately. Mildew Removal: Clean the area with a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water, or use a commercial fabric mildew remover. Test first. Scrub gently with a soft brush. Rinse thoroughly. Dry completely, preferably in sunlight, as UV exposure helps inhibit remaining spores. Stain Removal: Treat stains quickly using appropriate removers compatible with the fabric and treatment. Test removers on an inconspicuous area. Rinse well after treatment.

Reapplication Schedule

Waterproofing treatments degrade over time due to abrasion, UV exposure, dirt, and cleaning. Reapplication restores protection. Frequency: Depends on use intensity and exposure. For seasonal gear (tents, boat covers), annual reapplication (before the season) is a good baseline. Heavily used items may need it more often. Some treatments maintain effectiveness for roughly 60-80 hours of direct, intense UV exposure before noticeable degradation. Indicators: Reapply when water stops beading well and starts soaking into the fabric surface ('wetting out'). A simple sprinkle test periodically reveals the treatment's status. Process: Always clean and dry the canvas thoroughly before reapplying any treatment, following the original application steps.

Proper Storage

Correct storage prevents damage. Condition: Store canvas items only when completely clean and bone dry. Storing damp canvas causes mildew. Location: Choose a cool, dry, dark, well-ventilated area. Avoid damp basements or sealed plastic containers. Method: Loosely fold or roll items. Avoid sharp creases in the same spots repeatedly. Protection: Protect from rodents or insects if stored in sheds or garages. Correct storage practices are necessary for maintaining both the canvas and its treatment.

Beyond Waterproofing: UV and Mildew Resistance

Many canvas treatments offer added benefits like UV protection and mildew resistance. These secondary protections enhance the fabric's durability and utility. UV Protection: Ultraviolet radiation degrades fabric fibers over time, causing weakening and fading. This affects items like awnings, boat covers, and tents. Certain treatments, especially some acrylic formulations and specialized products (e.g., 303 Fabric Guard), contain UV inhibitors. These act like sunscreen, absorbing or blocking UV rays, potentially offering protection equivalent to UPF 30 or higher. Selecting a treatment with added UV protection prolongs canvas life in sunny conditions. Mildew Resistance: Keeping canvas dry via waterproofing is the primary mildew defense. However, in persistent humidity, mildew remains a risk, particularly for cotton canvas. Some treatments incorporate mildewcides or fungicides to actively inhibit mold growth, providing defense beyond just water repellency. Check product details for explicit mention of these features.

Achieving Effective Canvas Fabric Protection

Effective canvas fabric protection, focused on waterproofing, involves matching the treatment (wax, silicone, acrylic) to the canvas type (cotton, synthetic, blend) and its intended use. Success requires careful preparation (thorough cleaning, complete drying), correct application (even coating, adherence to method), and allowing full curing time for the treatment to bond. Ongoing fabric care through gentle cleaning, timely reapplication based on performance, and proper dry storage maintains the protection and extends the item's functional life against environmental factors like rain, UV rays, and mildew.

Recommendation for Action

To protect your canvas items effectively, begin by identifying the specific type of canvas material. Based on that identification and the item's use (e.g., clothing, tent, awning, cover), select the most appropriate waterproofing treatment—considering factors like breathability and UV resistance. Commit to the full preparation, application, and curing process as detailed by the product manufacturer. Implement a routine of proper fabric care and reapplication to maximize the lifespan and performance of your canvas goods.
